Siglo XX





In late October, I made a trip with three friends to the Siglo XX mine, located in Northem Potosi and historically Bolivia's most important and militant mining center. Above I am with my friend Nicky at once the mine's entrances. Inside we came across old campaign "posters" that we were told dated back to the 1960s as well as a chapel buried in the socavones. Below is the monumento al minero, or monument to the miner, in Siglo XX's Plaza del Minero. While once very rich in tin and other metals, the Siglo XX mines have been almost entirely depleted and are now mined by small groups of "cooperative" miners who compete for the little that remains...
